Material options for paver pointing: Advantages and disadvantages

Main Jointing Material Options:

• Traditional Joint Sand (Quarry Sand):

  • Advantages: The least expensive option initially, easy to apply.

  • Disadvantages: Highly susceptible to erosion from water and wind, encourages the growth of weeds and insects, requires frequent maintenance (re-sanding).

• Polymeric Sand (such as Gator G2 SuperSand and G2 Max):

  • Advantages: Contains polymers that, once activated by water, bind the sand grains together, providing excellent resistance to erosion, weed growth, and insects. Increases the stability of the pavers. Available in different colors. G2 Max offers superior resistance for high-traffic areas.

  • Disadvantages: More expensive than traditional sand, requires careful application and following manufacturer instructions for optimal activation.

• Joint Mortar:

  • Advantages: Very durable and resistant, creates rigid joints.

  • Disadvantages: More difficult to apply and repair, less flexible than sand (can crack if the ground shifts), may stain certain types of pavers. Generally less recommended for residential interlocking pavement applications.
