The complete guide to paving stone repointing: Steps and best practices

Re-jointing your interlocking pavement on the North Shore is a process that requires precision to ensure a durable and aesthetic result. At Pavé Proseal, we follow strict steps and apply best practices to ensure the quality of our work. Here’s an overview of our approach to re-jointing, including the use of products like G2 SuperSand and G2 Max.

Key Steps in Pavé Proseal’s Paver Re-Jointing:

Thorough Preparation:

  • Cleaning the Joints: We begin by carefully removing all the old jointing material, weeds, moss, and debris from the joints using appropriate tools (scrapers, vacuums). Clean joints are essential for proper adhesion of the new material.

  • Cleaning the Surface: The surface of the pavers is then swept and cleaned to remove any dirt or dust.

Application of Polymeric Sand (Gator):

  • Even Distribution: The polymeric sand (G2 SuperSand or G2 Max, depending on the needs) is poured onto the surface of the pavers and evenly distributed using a soft-bristle broom, ensuring it penetrates all the joints.

  • Compaction: We use a vibrating plate equipped with a protective mat to compact the sand into the joints, ensuring optimal filling and stability.

Polymer Activation:

  • Final Brushing: Any excess polymeric sand is carefully swept off the surface of the pavers.

  • Gradual Moistening: The crucial step of activation involves moistening the surface with water using a watering can or a hose with a fine spray nozzle. The moistening must be gradual and even, carefully following the manufacturer’s instructions for the Gator product. This water activates the polymers that bind the sand grains together.

Curing and Inspection:

  • Drying Time: It’s essential to allow the pavement to dry completely during the recommended period by the manufacturer to let the polymer harden properly.

  • Final Inspection: Once dry, we inspect the joints to ensure they are well-filled and solid.

Pavé Proseal’s Best Practices:

  • Use of high-quality products like G2 SuperSand and G2 Max.

  • Rigorous preparation of the joints.

  • Uniform application and adequate compaction of the polymeric sand.

  • Strict adherence to the manufacturer’s activation instructions.

  • Protection of the surface during the curing period.
